Are You picking up on Collective excuses?
When you are not doing what you want to be doing whether it is eating better, exercising, starting a meditation program, or something else; what is the real reason you are not doing it?
When I was in college I was not eating or buying hardly any vegetables. Since I was a Health major, this came up. Someone had asked me why I wasn’t buying them and my immediate response was, ‘They are too expensive.’ The reason I was giving didn’t really sit with me well. I noticed on my next shopping trip, I had no problem buying three dollar ice cream and similar junk food. Had I even looked at the prices of vegetables? Or, in deciding that they were too much, did I not even bother?
Next time I was at the store, I had a look at what I could buy for around $3. At the time and where I lived, there were some options for a dollar a pound. This really helped change my mindset to focus on what I can buy.
Often times I wonder if some of us are picking up on collective excuses and adopting them as our own. Vegetables are too expensive. I don’t have time. Have we really given it time to ponder? Not for the excuse but to ponder on how we are going to do it?
Is your excuse the real reason you are not doing what you want?
The pressure to fit into social norms are high. Next time you hear an excuse come out of your mouth, listen to it. I encourage asking yourself if it is true. Use curiosity if you need to find your reason.
