I have fasted where I was counting down the minutes until I could eat and I have fasted when I was more fat adapted and the latter is a much better experience. Here are some tips on how to get there.
- Be hydrated before and during the fast. Adding salt to your water can do wonders.
- Build your way up to longer fasts. Perhaps you just start with 1-3 hours longer than you normally wait to eat breakfast from dinner. Then work your way up.
- Eating less sugar in my diet overall seemed to be a factor to help build confidence and discipline.
- Try doing a fasted workout before a longer fast. This will build up your confidence.
- What you eat on your last meal can make a difference. Make it count.
- Plan to rest a little more. Give yourself time to relax, not have so much stress and maybe take a nap.
- Plan some light activity to keep your mind occupied.
- Know your motivation. Look up benefits of fasting. This can really help stay motivated. A lot of healing can happen during a fast.
- Fast long enough to push your edge and get the benefits you desire, but not so long that you become more obsessed with food. (It is normal that you will appreciate food more, but obsessing about desserts after may not be helping your long term goals.)
- Electrolytes can really be important and there are ones that will not break your fast.
As you gain more experience if you follow tip #2, you will see what works best for you.
*Consult your Doctor before fasting, especially if you have any medical conditions or take medications. Some medications need to be taken with food.
